Our very first interview for No Sleeper was none other than my own parent's. Not only a practice run for our interview format, sound equipment, video gear, lighting, but an amazing conversation with my own parent's. Filled with stories I'd heard a million times but also scattered throughout were stories I had never heard, even after 30 years of being their son.
We arrived at their house around midday just like any other weekend, but this time Ramsay and I had a purpose, other than enjoying each other's company. We had sent over the list of question's we were going to ask a week prior to allow them to marinate. Ramsay and I felt that we should let the interviewee(s) some time to mull them over as they are thought provoking questions. We got feedback from out parent's, they confirmed that a week was enough time for adequate answers.
After testing our sound gear, getting the camera equipment dialed in with the lighting, we started rolling. Almost immediately the tears started flowing. As much as the interview was for us to gather insight on parenting, it seemed to be a release for my parent's to talk about things they haven't talked or thought about in months, maybe even years.
After about an hour of questions and answers, the interview was complete. My dad even redoing one of the questions because his first answer he felt that he cried too much and wanted to give a better answer, which he did. After that we hung out together as we usually do on the weekend and my dad cooked up smash burgers. It was a success.
Later that night Ramsay and I were reviewing the footage and to our surprise, everything was just how we wanted it aside from a couple lighting hiccups. Ramsay took some days to edit everything and put the whole interview into a cohesive video to add to the blog post, while I worked on the website.
After finishing the video and website at about the same time, we put together the first No Sleeper interview, The Alexander's.
